At my time at Framestore I was fortunate enough to be involved in some pretty amazing jobs. None so exciting as Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day.

As CGI Supervisor I was in charge of the creation of ice maidens and scorpions. Using scans from the model Kaya, we constructed a simpler polygonal version, which we enhanced so that she had edges that would bend the light like real ice.

MAKING OF VIDEO

This 'making of' illustrates how crucial our reference block of ice was for refraction, surface texture, internal cracks and caustic light which refracted and shed onto the floor. Andrew Chapman and my biggest challenge was human movement.

As arms and legs and ankles bent, our tests looked like the character was formed of gelatin. So we altered the animation to jar and clunk as much as possible, and internal cracks would form as she performed walks and arm raises. The eye went to these and distracted from the jelly like bends.

We had real scorpions brought into the studio which we studied and rotoscoped so that we could populate the wet floor. Masterfully textured, lit and rendered by Jake Mengers. All comped by William Bartlett in Inferno. Things were harder to achieve in 2002. And we worked on film level/resolution effects in our commercial department, and on a commercial timeline.
