PREVIZ
I have a love and affinity with Previz (or previsualisation).
This is the process of simplifying complex shots into 3D simplified forms, allowing to plan visual ideas/sequences before things get expensive on set. And also allows for cameras to go wild, see the same angle from various lenses and see shots quickly with a range of movements. This, bashed together in an edit can quickly show epic scale, emotion, humour... all with some primitive shapes.

I document this further in my educational documentation ASSETS FOR STUDENTS for Creative Skillset on page 16

ACTOMATIC
I learned about 'actomatics' from Daniel Kleinman's Johnnie Walker 'Fish' and XBox 'Champagne' projects in 2001. Shots were designed and planned from pre-existing footage which contained the shapes, form, movement and gestures.
Arguably this feels like cheating. But done sensitively with authentisism and integrity, you can pull together the pace of a tricky commercial very quickly.

As a director I often want an effect, and can pull from my cranial Rolodex a shot I saw years ago from some abstract movie. Finding said shot and editing it into my collage of a sequence brings magical sequences together very quickly.

COMMERCIAL - PREVIZ EXAMPLES (early 2000's)
When commercials took a turn at Framestore around the year 2000, I helped introduce previz as a key part of the pipeline and the directors process.
This video shows early examples of this in action. Featuring Chrysler Golden Gate for Daniel Kleinman, British Airways for Daniel Barber and Levi's Odyssey for Jonathan Glazer

COMMERCIAL - British Airways
This spot is an example of pre virtual production. We mapped out the commercial entirely within the computer. The measurements then got sent to the fabrication crew who built the set in various pieces, and the camera motion to the motion control crew who mapped out how to film this piece with digital information controlling a robotic arm (Milo). This video documents the entire process

SHORT FILM - Varmints
This dreamy, languid dream of a film by Mark Craste needed a 3D previz to help conceptualise

NIGHTCLUB DESIGN - BOOOM
I was romanced by Mike and Claire Manumission to help redesign a beautifully sculpted but awfully polished Ibiza nightclub Booom. Here you can see a full transformation take place within a previz showing what 'could be'. The owner Cipriani saw this projected in the club itself. When the lights came back up, he was immediately back in his 'before' space. 'I want everything' he said.

FILM - The Inbetweeners Movie
Legendary comedy director Ben Palmer wanted something special to open his film The Inbetweeners Movie. The Simpsons meets Harry Potter with a wanking gag. Was the brief. The previz drove a terrifying helicopter shoot, to get JUST the right cloud to fly through. A mini copter shoot (pre drone) in which the kid on the bike almost got decapitated. And a shoot on set featring Jay jacking off to porn with ham in his hand. (boy I miss 2012)

LIVE - Soulwax 'Machine'
This film started, like most with an idea. Soulwax/2manyDJ's asked the question how do we encapsulate our obsession with vinyl? Saam Farahmand got in touch and with my studio The House of Curves I helped design and previz the single shot sequence. One camera that pans vertically and seamlessly from an infinite conveyor belt of vinyl to a mold which forms the complete logo, getting sexualised along the way.

FASHION - Louis Vuitton
After editing films for Kim Jones, he asked me to help design his 2013 collection for Louis Vuitton Menswear. Before video screens on the floor was popular we concieved of the notion to have a 40 metre catwalk made of pixels with 10 metre's of it shooting up the back.

VR - Battle for Avengers Tower
Taking this 3d knowledge into a virtual space, I directed a piece for Samsung/Marvel. A 3 minute slowmotion event, seeing a battle commence as we the viewer fly through Avengers tower. See basic previz turn to nausia previz to animation previz to final.

COMEDY - Hawkingbot
For Comic Relief, writing legend Richard Curtis wanted to transform Stephen Hawking  into a transformer, this previz shows the transformation and design

VR - Depth Test
For Glenfiddich, I pitched an underwater film idea based on the worlds longest recorded freedive.
It shows accurately the distance travelled and the actual duration on one single breath.

RIDES - Mars
This is an evolved previz, featuring a journey over the surface of Mars for an upcoming ride.

GAMING - NDA upcoming project
I've been working with a games company for the last two years as Cinematics Director. Message me for more information with regards to my previz work on this sensitive project. I created over 90 minutes of work.
